Malware targeting Google’s Android mobile operating system exploded in the last several months, its volume quintupling since July, Juniper Networks said today.

The rash of infected apps aimed at Android owners shows no sign of abating, said Dan Hoffman, Juniper’s chief mobile security analyst and a member of the company’s global threat center.

“We’re seeing a mix of the traditional hacking community [working] on malware very similar to organized efforts on the PC side, as well as people who are just a little smart, the ’15-year-old kid crowd,’ who are able to hide some malicious content in an app,” said Hoffman in an interview today.

According to Juniper’s research, the number of Android malware samples — each defining a different piece of attack code, or a variant of one discovered earlier — increased by 472% since July 2011. the bulk of that growth occurred in September and October.

“We’ve seen an exponential growth in Android malware over the last several months,” Juniper said in a blog post that accompanied Juniper’s recently-published mobile threat report.

The prime threat remains purposefully-malicious Android apps that are crafted by criminals, often pirated versions of legitimate applications, then planted in either Google’s official Android Market or in one of the scores of alternate download sites, which are especially popular in Asia — China in particular.

“That is very clearly the threat now,” said Hoffman, who added that the hackers’ strategy would likely continue indefinitely.

That’s because Google doesn’t control what apps can be installed on an Android mobile device, as Apple does with code-signing technologies for iOS apps, and so makes third-party app download centers possible. Nor does Google vet apps submitted to the Android Market.

Other security researchers have noted the same when they have found malicious apps in the Android Market or in unsanctioned e-stores.

At least three different waves of malware — in March, June and finally July — infiltrated the Android Market this year. the malicious apps were removed by Google only after they had been downloaded by an unknown number of users.

Far more attack apps have appeared in Chinese app stores that distribute Android software.

Juniper speculated that the hackers now crafting Android malware are those who used to specialize in Symbian and Windows Mobile attack code. But as those operating systems’ share plummeted — Web metrics company Net Applications put their shares during October at 3.5% and 0.07%, respectively, down from 8% and 0.2% a year ago — the criminals have abandoned those platforms and jumped on Android.

And those hackers know their stuff.

“Together, the Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile platforms are the oldest and most researched mobile platforms, and devices running those mobile operating systems have been the targets of the most prolific and effective malware known to affect mobile devices,” said Juniper.

While Google’s practice of not policing the Android Market, and its inability to restrict all apps to its own distribution channel, has been pegged as the primary reason for the OS’s vulnerability, Hoffman argued that the policy also gave users the means to protect themselves.

“There may be a better vetting process on iOS, but a really critical point is that Android users have the benefit of a security marketplace,” said Hoffman, referring to the large number of anti-malware programs available for Google-powered smartphones and tablets.

“In iOS, consumers and even enterprise don’t have a choice,” Hoffman said. “There’s no benefit of competition because users are completely reliant on Apple for security.”

Hoffman has a point: When Lookout Security, a leader in Android-based antivirus software, recently introduced a version for iOS it was unable to provide any malware scanning capabilities in the app.

Not surprisingly for someone who works for a security firm, Hoffman also argued that it wasn’t up to the OS provider to guarantee a secure device; users have responsibilities, too.

“No matter what policies an app store may have, the real way is to protect a device is to protect it with security software,” Hoffman said. “You have to protect your mobile devices just like you protect your PCs.”

Android Malware Explodes, Jumps Five-fold Since July

When the Milwaukee Brewers signed Ryan Braun with the knowledge that they also must soon sign Zack Greinke, they sent a message to Prince Fielder: we won’t sign you this offseason.

This is not because they don’t want to, it’s because they can’t. the Cleveland Indians knew C.C. Sabathia was a $20 million a year pitcher, and no small market team can sign such talent, so they traded him away. Many idiot fans criticized them for it, but there was no way a prudent small market team could have kept him in the long run.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t do this with Prince. to their credit, since they had a playoff- worthy team, they kept him throughout the season with the hopes of beating the favorite Philadelphia Phillies to get to the World Series. the Brewers are all in on this season, but are also playing it smart with Braun and Greinke so that they can be fighting for the division lead for many years to come.

Prince Fielder is a nice kid. I should say a nice guy, but I remember him as a kid. he and my son were in the same class at Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Florida. he was not a spoiled brat, like many sons of pro athletes can be. he was not a trouble maker. he was the kid next door, and I say this as a big compliment.

So, I am biased in my response to his being honest when he said publicly that he will be gone from the Brewers after the playoffs. If he were maximizing his relationship with the Brewers fans, he would have invoked player speak and said how he was focusing his attentions on clinching the division and bringing a World Series championship to the Brewers, and then after that, he would look at his options. he would say how he loves the Brewer fans and would like to stay in town if it is at all possible.

Instead, he said out loud what everyone knows – the Brewers don’t have the money to sign him, so he will be going elsewhere. I have no problem with this. We know a player of Prince’s stature is going to do everything he can to lead the Brewers to a World Series. he won’t change his style of play because he doesn’t expect to re-sign with them. so why is everyone worried?

The next question, of course, is who will sign him? Prince will be a $20 million per year player as a first basemen or a DH. the Yankees have heavy hitting, golden glover mark Teixeira at first. Would they sign Prince as a DH? You bet. the Red Sox have Adrian Gonzalez at first base. same situation with DH? Prince might like the Monster in Fenway rather than the deep seats in left field at Yankee stadium.

But, there is a sleeper. the soon to be Miami Marlins will have a new stadium, and who better to sell tickets and luxury seat licenses than a young man who comes from a town only 2 hours north of the new stadium? so, look for the Marlins to be in the mix for Prince Fielder as well.

One of the keys to winning a fantasy football league is the ability to draft Sleepers. Sleepers are NFL players who are drafted in much lower rounds than their ending statistics warrant. In shopping terms, this is getting a bargain price for a valuable product. The estimated draft position is taken from the Maximum Fantasy Sports Mock Draft found on their home page. The Mock Draft was formulated using the generally accepted standard league configuration.

2009 Fantasy Football Sleepers

QB: Kyle Orton (Denver) – Orton was brought to Denver in the off-season trade for Jay Cutler. He is leaving an offense in Chicago that limited his passing attempts and had few receiving threats. In Denver, Coach Josh McDaniels will want to give Orton the opportunity to prove his controversial trade of Cutler was a smart move. With Brandon Marshall (maybe), Eddie Royal, Tony Sheffler, and others as his receiving options, Orton will put up fantastic numbers for the 16th QB off the board at the projected last pick of the 11th round.

RB: Derrick Ward (Tampa Bay) – Ward skipped out of new York into a situation in Tampa where the QB position is up for grabs. This scenario almost always favors the running game. While Ward was second fiddle in new York to Brandon Jacobs, he still put up a quiet 1000 yards (5.6 ypc). there is talk of a platoon situation with Earnest Graham in Tampa, but that is what is driving his draft position down. Ward will be the feature back and will receive the majority of carries throughout the year. Picking up a 1A running back in a tandem as the 30th RB off the board in the projected mid-7th round is a steal.

WR: Josh Morgan (SF) – Morgan is the true definition of a Sleeper. Isaac Bruce receives the attention due to his surprising results from last year and Michael Crabtree gets the press due to his high-profile college career, draft position and current holdout. Crabtree will sign before the season starts as it is asinine to expect Top-5 rookie money as the 10th overall pick. however, his holdout, rookie status and lingering ankle injury will cost him playing time this year and Isaac Bruce will slow down as the Niners work some youth in at the WR position. This will be Morgan. He is projected to be available at the start of the 12th round – a very nice place for a receiver that you can start every week.

TE: Ben Celek (PHIL) – Tight End is a position that is very deep and turns out Sleepers year-in and year-out. With that in mind, you can let other managers spend high draft picks on Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten and Antonio Gates. Celek turned it on at the end of 2008, especially during the playoffs. The Eagles let long-time McNabb favorite, L.J. Smith, go since they have his replacement in Celek. With Philly’s plethora of wispy receivers, McNabb needs someone to make the tough catches and hold onto the ball without leaving the field on a cart. Celek will fill that role nicely as a 16th round pick.

D: San Diego Chargers – The Chargers defense gave up 347 points last year but were missing Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips for most of last year. They are back and healthy this year. The Chargers also added Larry English in the middle of the defense. The schedule is very favorable (how can it not be when playing 6 games against AFC West teams?) and the offense will be dominant once again, which is helpful in assisting the defense with additional sacks and interceptions. The Chargers are projected as the 18th defense off the board in our fantasy football Mock Draft, which will occur in the 16th round.

K: Garrett Hartley (NO) – after the Saints came to their senses and dropped Martin Gramatica and replaced him with Hartley, Hartley promptly went 13-13 on FGs and 28-28 on extra points. While kickers rarely get much attention in the fantasy football world, any kicker that is accurate, kicks in a dome over half the year (including a road game in Atlanta) and kicks for a team that puts a load of points on the board is worthy of drafting in the very last round of your draft as your only kicker.

Android and Droid Apps: BioWallet Android Uses Your Signature Instead of Long Passwords

Heading into fantasy baseball draft season this year, the consensus top OF was Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun and deservedly so. once you got past that unanimous choice however, the next name plucked from the player pool more times than not was none other than the Dodgers’ multi-tooled Matt Kemp. Kemp was coming off a truly remarkable 2009 season when he threatened the holy grail of 30/30 by putting up a .297 batting average along with 97 runs 26 HR 101 RBI and 36 SB. there was not a category that Kemp failed to excel in and so his stock shot through the roof once the calendar turned to the 2010 season. In fact Kemp’s average draft position was 7.89 which put him squarely in the middle of the first round and based on last year’s numbers, there was no quibbling with that position. Fantasy owners who were lucky enough to grab him (including yours truly at number 6 overall as a I literally obsessed over the man to the point that I distubed myself) had visions of 40/40 dancing in their heads.

Now turn the page to August 2010 as we sit here and stare at Kemp’s.261 batting average along with 63 runs 19 HR 67 RBI and 16 SB. Ummmm what the hell is that crap???? Yeah exactly. To say that Kemp has let down his owners this season is a huge understatement and the only consistency the man has shown is being inconsistent all year. Dissapointment is sky high with his performance and you could argue that based on his draft position (outside of Joe Mauer owners), Matt Kemp has maybe been one of the biggest letdowns in fantasy baseball. so the question is: what went wrong? And who is the real Matt Kemp: 2009 or 2010? And finally what can we expect from Kemp moving forward? so with that as out backdrop, lets break it down and figure this out.

The first thing I want to make note of with Kemp is the batting average. As I noted earlier, Kemp put up a very good.297 line in 2009 which followed a.290 2008. so clearly Kemp is letting down big time in that department with is current.261. Sure he will never hit.320 due to the fact he struggles a bit with righties (and since righties are more numerous in baseball, he sees them more and thus there is a bigger negative impact on the average) and also due to Kemp being a high strikeout hitter. In fact the strikeouts are the big RED FLAG here as Kemp already has 122 K’s this year when he had 139 all of last season. that tells us he is a. uncomfortable in the box right now AND B. becoming more undisciplined in his approach. this is a terrible combo to have and is the main reason we are seeing that poor average for the duration of the year. Flat out, if Kemp doesnt improve his batting eye and plate approach, than he will never get back to the.290 mark which is where his baseline is. Ultimately I think Kemp will improve there as he gets older as he still is quite young but the very best we can expect is around.290.

Lets now take a look at the power numbers. this is one area where Kemp is doing all right in with his 19 HR’s as he is on pace to equal or even exceed last year’s 26. He did start out with 7 in April but has been consistent with 3 or 4 in each month since. And we can believe that Kemp will eventually hit 30 as he hits his hitting prime in the next few years so this is a category stock that is going up.

Now as far as the runs and RBI well these are always a little harder to speculate on due to the fact that the team has a huge impact on their totals. Kemp’s 63 runs are behind last year’s pace along with the 67 RBI’s falling behind as well. the Dodger lineup has been besieged with injuries to Andre Ethier, Rafael Furcal, and Manny Ramirez all year so I cant blame Kemp much here. Dont get too caught up in this aspect of his game as its not totally his fault. that takes us to the stolen base situation which definitely is Kemp’s fault.

The steals have probably been the most aggravating aspect of Kemp’s game along with the average due to the fact that the stolen base is what elevates him past the Matt Holliday’s and Josh Hamilton’s of the world. Kemp has truly been awful in this spot as he has only 16 steals (which is WAY behind last year’s pace) and has been caught an absurd 13 times. that is just unacceptable for someone with his type of speed and the fact he got caught only 8 times in 42 tries last year. there hasn’t been much of an explanation offered here as to why he is doing so poorly but this is a huge problem for a few reasons. for one, you got to think that at some point manager Joe Torre will be forced to give him the red light in that regard so as not to give away outs. Also Kemp may even get gun shy himself as there are few things in baseball more humiliating for a player than to be thrown out stealing. the walk back to the dugout when everyone stares at you and your failure is tough to stomach. this is a big double whammy that could curtail his steals going forward. And if Kemp is not stealing bases, than you can DEFINITELY place him behind the Holliday’s and Hamilton’s (and maybe even the Nelson Cruz’s of the world) in the OF pecking order.

Finally the one thing that also has to be looked at here that is not Matt Kemp’s fault is the treatment he has received by Torre in regards to his place in the lineup. Flat out it is a joke the way he has been bounced around anywhere from 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 6th and even 7th. And than twice being sat down for two straight days. Add it all up and you get a jumpy player who has no comfort zone being in a set lineup spot. Dont overlook this issue being one that has a big negative impact on Kemp’s numbers because more than anything a baseball player craves normalcy. When you play 162 games a year, a routine is a necessary part of the game and if there is no firm setup in place, than players can react negatively. there is no doubt in my mind that some of Kemp’s struggles have to do with him being moved all over the lineup. you have to bat a certain way in different parts of the lineup and this can easily throw off someone’s approach at the plate. Kemp to me is a perfect number 5 hitter and that’s where he should be. He doesn’t have the pop to hit cleanup and strikes out too much for the number 2 and 3 spot but 5 is where its at for his game.

All in all, Matt Kemp has been a very big disappointment in fantasy owners minds, including mine, and both he and the team have to take blame for him being where he is with his production. we are now hearing word that Kemp’s agent has requested a trade for next season so it appears as if things are going to get ugly which of course is another huge negative. with that being said, Matt Kemp in my opinion is still a tremendously talented player who you shouldn’t give up on. Of course next season there is no way he will be a first round pick but late second round seems right. Players with this much natural talent are ones you have to stick with. Its the same thing I wrote in the Justin Upton column last week. Kemp has many good years ahead of him if he can work through his current issues. Stay the course long term but by all means feel angry about this season’s effort.

What to Make of Matt Kemp in 2010

Toys ‘R’ us Inc. has expanded its mobile offerings for the holiday season, updating its iPhone and Android apps and adding technology from eBay Inc., Google Inc., Foursquare and shopkick. the intent is to help customers more quickly locate the product they want, obtain special deals and complete purchases, all from their mobile devices.

“Mobile commerce is our fastest-growing channel of consumer engagement, as shoppers increasingly use their smartphones to research gifts, get product reviews, compare prices, check availability of an item at a local store, save money with deals, and pay for their purchases,” says Greg Ahearn, chief marketing officer at Toys ‘R’ us U.S. “as new technologies emerge, we continue to partner with leading providers to enhance our mobile offerings, making it easier than ever for Toys ‘R’ us customers to navigate our stores and web sites to find the must-have gifts for the kids in their lives.”

The merchant, no. 40 in the Internet Retailer Mobile Commerce Top 300, has added a gift finder to its iPhone and Android apps. the gift finder asks a consumer a series of questions about the child she’s shopping for and provides gift suggestions based on age and interests. she then can sort the gift finder results by relevance, best-selling items, top-rated items or price.

The iPhone app also is getting a boost from eBay technology. Toys ‘R’ us has integrated Milo, a local store inventory feature, and RedLaser 3.0, a shopping and bar code scanning feature. Shoppers on the go can enter the name of a product into the iPhone app’s search box and receive results that say whether the product is available at a nearby store. through Milo’s integration with Red Laser, the shopper then can pay for the product and have it set aside for pickup.

Customers shopping at a Toys ‘R’ us store on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, can check in through the mobile social Foursquare app to receive the Geoffrey Holiday Badge. after unlocking the badge, those who check in can redeem a coupon for 15% off a purchase of $150 or more.

In 100 stores in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles, customers can receive savings by walking in the door of a store via the mobile social shopkick app. Shopkick rewards shoppers for visiting thousands of partner retailers nationwide, allowing them to earn “kicks” that in this case can be redeemed for Toys ‘R’ us gift cards, among other things. Shopkick users visiting participating Toys ‘R’ us stores from Nov. 24 through Nov. 26 can earn 500 kicks, and a coupon for $10 off the purchase of $100 or more.

And the retailer has joined a small group of pioneering merchants accepting payments made through a smartphone-based mobile wallet via wireless near Field Communication, or NFC, technology. 200 stores in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Francisco now are outfitted with NFC point-of-sale terminals that can be used for making payments via the Google Wallet service on Sprint Nexus S 4G phones, one of the only smartphones with an NFC chip inside. A customer waves her Nexus phone near the terminal and the phone wirelessly communicates payment information to the payment terminal to complete a transaction.

Suck it, *ichigan [Ice Hockey Edition]. “ Freshman forward Darik Angeli scored two goals to lead first-place Ohio State past Michigan 2-1 in Friday’s Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Yost Arena.

Angeli scored his fifth goal of the season midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie.

Ohio State is 9-3-1 overall and 6-2-1-1 in the CCHA and entered action this weekend tied for first place in the league with Notre Dame and Lake Superior State (Mich.) with 17 points apiece.

Michigan is 7-4-2 overall and 3-4-2-1 in the conference for sixth place.

In the national collegiate polls, Michigan is ranked no. 7 and Ohio State no. 14.

The two teams also play in Ann Arbor Saturday night.

Michigan and Ohio State will also meet Jan. 15 in the Frozen Diamond Faceoff outdoor game at Progressive Field, the home of the Cleveland Indians.

It seems as though ShayStar.com forgot to update their press release, because just two days before the Jersey City video shoot, on November 12, 2011, the famous Dipset rapper, real name LaRon James, had his Bentley impounded after he was arrested in Bergen County, NJ for “suspicion of making terrorist threats, and refusing to let police search his car” according to TMZ.

Reminiscent of Ice-T’s tweets in Jersey City jury duty, Juelz was tweeting during the entire ordeal:

“A! how many mugshots they gonna take of me smfh!!! 46k bail,” Juelz wrote (@TheJuelzSantana). “Police impounded my bently so I guess I gotta bring the rose out! *expletive* they thought that was my only car lol #Whooooaaaaaa My car was parked an they asked to search it. an I said no. so they locked me up an said will get a Judge search warrant smh wow,” Santana tweeted.

Confirmed in the video above, which was filmed two days after Santana’s Bentley was impounded, you can see a rose-colored car, and no Bentley.

To further complicate the story, Bergen County police said “we have no records of a LaRon James aka Juelz Santana being arrested on November, 12, 2011.”

“Try calling the Prosecutor’s office tomorrow morning,” police said.

Emails and tweets were sent to the Juelz’s representation, TMZ.com, and Shay Star Productions, asking for more details, but no responses have been received so far.
