Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, hasn’t been standing on the sidelines. The company is no newcomer to the use ofcarbon fiber, having incorporated the material into the SLR McLaren, but Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche and his R&D chief, Thomas Weber, understand the need to use the material in higher volumes to counter Project i. The company signed a cooperation deal in 2010 with Toray-a Japanese carbon fiber supplier with similar expertise to SGL’s-and has been dreaming up many new projects.

Mercedes considered and then dismissed a subcompact BMW i3 competitor due to the financial risk of putting so much technology into such a price-competitive segment (the Quandt family is largely assuming this risk for BMW). It also thought about a supercar that would have slotted above the SLS AMG but realized that the time isn’t right for such a ear. The winning idea, it turns out, is a four-door sedan. It may not have the sex appeal of a supercar or the green luster of a subcompact, but the mid-size sedan is Mercedes-Benz’s signature product and carries all the brand’s traditional values.

The E Superlight, as it’s called at the moment, will be close in size w the CLS. It willlikcly cost as much as the next S-class, though, due to its exotic construction. The Superlight will be a true carbon-fiber vehicle, forgoing the aluminum platform that underpins BMW’s Project i vehicles and the metal subframes commonly used witll composite monocoques, as the carbon fiber will he strong enough to support the drivetrain and the suspension. Insiders suggest tile Superligllt’s curb weight could be as much as 800 pounds lighter than the current steel-bodied E-class. The sole intended source of propulsion for the E Superlight is a fuel-cell powertrain. Gasoline, diesel, and hybrid variations may come later.

We don’t know yet what visual theme the Mercedes board will go with, but it might resemble the illustrations shown here. According to the grapevine, we can expect rear doors that slide out and back to reveal an unobstructed passenger compartmentthe carhon-fiher structure should eliminate the need for B~pi1lars. Timing is still provisional, but production is expected to commence in 20tS and ramp up to nearly 20,000 cars a year by 2017. Not coincidentally, that’s remarkably similar to the carbon  fiber vehicle volume that BMW has in mind. – Georg Kaeher

A total lunar eclipse will occur early Saturday morning (Dec. 10), casting the moon into shadow and making it appear bright red and supersized.

In North America, skywatchers located in western Canada and the United States should have a great view of the eclipse, which will start at around 7:45 a.m. EST (4:45 a.m. PST, 1245 GMT), when the Earth’s shadow begins to creep across the lunar disk.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, throwing the moon into shadow.

"For people in the western United States, the eclipse is deepest just before local dawn," NASA scientists said in a statement. "Face west to see the red moon sinking into the horizonas the sun rises behind your back. It’s a rare way to begin your day."

Observers in Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and central and eastern Asia should also be well placed for the celestial show. [Video: Return of the Blood Red Moon]

Unlike solar eclipses that are often visible to people within only a narrow slice of the globe, a lunar eclipse can be seen by anyone on the moon-facing side of the planet, explained Alan MacRobert, senior editor of the magazine Sky & Telescope.

"We’re all looking at this together," MacRobert said in a statement.

Skywatchers in the central time zone may get only a short glimpse, as the moon will set while it is only partially eclipsed, before the total eclipse stage begins, MacRoberts said. unfortunately, people farther east will also miss out on the opportunity due to the setting moon and rising sun.

But for those who are favorably placed, this eclipse promises a stunning show, NASA officials said.

"not only will the moon be beautifully red, it will also be inflated by the moon illusion," NASA scientists explained. "For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects."

In reality, the moon is not any wider, but the human brain sees it differently, and those in the western United States will notice that the moon looks supersized.

And despite passing into shadow, the moon will be appear to be illuminated in dazzling reddish hues.

1. Create the dressing for this salad by combining egg yolk and all the other ingredients, except the cabbage and potatoes.

2. Arrange the pieces of cabbage and sliced potatoes on a plate. Add the beef next.

3. Pour the dressing over the finished salad and serve.

Homemade Recipes Take too Much Time

One of the myths related to preparing homemade dog food recipes is that it takes a great deal of time, sorting through ingredients and preparing the food. This recipe puts that theory to rest.

However, beyond the ease of preparation, my question to any dog lover is are you willing to sacrifice your dog’s health to pick up a few extra minutes a day.

Just today I read about a poor dog (we’ll call her Shasta) who had suffered from a debilitating skin condition all of her life. she had open sores on her face and paws.

Her family had turned her over to be euthanized because they could no longer afford her medical bills. The shelter immediately placed her on a low-carb, natural diet and her transformation was nothing short of amazing. she has been scab free for months now.

There are simply too many testimonies where dogs show dramatic improvements in health when they are switched from kibble to natural food. Excuse the diversion. On to the next recipe.

Beef and Veggie Pie

Ingredients:

- Whole cup of chicken stock

- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch

- 1 commercial pie crust (nine inches)

- 1 egg (hard-boiled; remove the shell and slice)

- Half cup of beef (ground, low fat)

- Two cups of cooked brown rice

- 1 teaspoon of parsley

- 1 teaspoon of thyme

- 1 teaspoon of oregano

- Whole cup of broccoli

- 1 tablespoon of canola oil

Steps:

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Cook the vegetables for a few minutes in a pan or skillet. Add the oil before adding the vegetables.

3. Combine the vegetables with the spices (thyme, oregano, parsley).

4. Dissolve the cornstarch before adding to the chicken stock.

5. Transfer the cooked vegetables to the pie crust. Pour the chicken stock, too.

6. Bake the pie for at least 30 minutes. Serve warm.

This rich pumpkin pie recipe is reprinted with permission from “Holiday Dinners with Bradley Ogden,” (Running Press, $30) by chef Bradley Ogden. the spice mix makes extra to use over ice cream, in oatmeal or even in coffee. and the pie crust recipe makes two crusts; use one for another pie.

Makes 1 (9-inch) pie, serving 8

3 cups all-purpose flour

12 ounces (3 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces and frozen

1-1/4 cups sour cream

3/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1-3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1-1/2 cups heavy cream

2 teaspoons Spice Mixture

1 cup canned unsweetened pumpkin purée

3/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Make pie crust: Pulse flour and salt together in a food processor until combined. Scatter butter over mixture; pulse until butter is the size of large peas, about 20 pulses. Add sour cream and pulse until dough forms one large ball.

Divide dough into 2 even pieces. Turn each onto a sheet of plastic wrap and flatten into a 4-inch disk. Wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour to let the dough rest. before rolling dough out, let it sit on counter to soften about 10 minutes. (Dough can be refrigerated up to two days or frozen for up to one month).

To make the pie: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Lay dough on a lightly floured work surface and roll outward from its center into a 12-inch circle, about 1/8-inch thick. Loosely fold into quarters and transfer to a 9-inch glass pie plate; delicately unfold and press it into pie plate, letting excess hang over the pie plate. Trim excess to about 1/2-inch larger than the edge of pie plate. Tuck excess dough underneath itself to form a neat, even edge that sits on top of the pie plate and press a decorative trim with your thumb and forefinger. Line pie shell with a double layer of foil and fill with pie weights, old dried beans or cleaned pennies.

Bake 15 minutes. Remove weights and foil and continue to bake until light golden brown and crisp, about 5 minutes longer. place pie plate on cooling rack while mixing filling. keep oven on.

In a small bowl, combine all of the ingredients for the spice mixture.

For the filling: Whisk cream, eggs, brandy and 2 teaspoons spice mixture in a medium bowl until combined. Add pumpkin, brown sugar and sugar; whisk to combine. Pour pumpkin custard into warm pre-baked pie crust. Bake until edges of pie are set and center registers 175 degrees on an instant-read thermometer, about 45 minutes. Cool pie to room temperature on a rack before serving.

Malware targeting Google’s Android mobile operating system exploded in the last several months, its volume quintupling since July, Juniper Networks said today.

The rash of infected apps aimed at Android owners shows no sign of abating, said Dan Hoffman, Juniper’s chief mobile security analyst and a member of the company’s global threat center.

“We’re seeing a mix of the traditional hacking community [working] on malware very similar to organized efforts on the PC side, as well as people who are just a little smart, the ’15-year-old kid crowd,’ who are able to hide some malicious content in an app,” said Hoffman in an interview today.

According to Juniper’s research, the number of Android malware samples — each defining a different piece of attack code, or a variant of one discovered earlier — increased by 472% since July 2011. the bulk of that growth occurred in September and October.

“We’ve seen an exponential growth in Android malware over the last several months,” Juniper said in a blog post that accompanied Juniper’s recently-published mobile threat report.

The prime threat remains purposefully-malicious Android apps that are crafted by criminals, often pirated versions of legitimate applications, then planted in either Google’s official Android Market or in one of the scores of alternate download sites, which are especially popular in Asia — China in particular.

“That is very clearly the threat now,” said Hoffman, who added that the hackers’ strategy would likely continue indefinitely.

That’s because Google doesn’t control what apps can be installed on an Android mobile device, as Apple does with code-signing technologies for iOS apps, and so makes third-party app download centers possible. Nor does Google vet apps submitted to the Android Market.

Other security researchers have noted the same when they have found malicious apps in the Android Market or in unsanctioned e-stores.

At least three different waves of malware — in March, June and finally July — infiltrated the Android Market this year. the malicious apps were removed by Google only after they had been downloaded by an unknown number of users.

Far more attack apps have appeared in Chinese app stores that distribute Android software.

Juniper speculated that the hackers now crafting Android malware are those who used to specialize in Symbian and Windows Mobile attack code. But as those operating systems’ share plummeted — Web metrics company Net Applications put their shares during October at 3.5% and 0.07%, respectively, down from 8% and 0.2% a year ago — the criminals have abandoned those platforms and jumped on Android.

And those hackers know their stuff.

“Together, the Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile platforms are the oldest and most researched mobile platforms, and devices running those mobile operating systems have been the targets of the most prolific and effective malware known to affect mobile devices,” said Juniper.

While Google’s practice of not policing the Android Market, and its inability to restrict all apps to its own distribution channel, has been pegged as the primary reason for the OS’s vulnerability, Hoffman argued that the policy also gave users the means to protect themselves.

“There may be a better vetting process on iOS, but a really critical point is that Android users have the benefit of a security marketplace,” said Hoffman, referring to the large number of anti-malware programs available for Google-powered smartphones and tablets.

“In iOS, consumers and even enterprise don’t have a choice,” Hoffman said. “There’s no benefit of competition because users are completely reliant on Apple for security.”

Hoffman has a point: When Lookout Security, a leader in Android-based antivirus software, recently introduced a version for iOS it was unable to provide any malware scanning capabilities in the app.

Not surprisingly for someone who works for a security firm, Hoffman also argued that it wasn’t up to the OS provider to guarantee a secure device; users have responsibilities, too.

“No matter what policies an app store may have, the real way is to protect a device is to protect it with security software,” Hoffman said. “You have to protect your mobile devices just like you protect your PCs.”

Android Malware Explodes, Jumps Five-fold Since July

Many people that live in Los Angeles actually live in towns outside of it, which eliminates many downsides to the town. The city of Los Angeles is often expensive and unsafe, but the many neighboring towns in the area are what most people will want to look into when organizing their big move. Although surrounding areas offer almost everything that one could possibly need, they also offer easy traveling for when they do not have the things one needs.

Woodland Hills is a superb place to either start out at, or live in forever. One of the primary aspects that make it a great location is its higher cost of living. It is especially crucial to find a safe place to live in the Los Angeles area, and the rates in WH help accomplish this. Just like any city, there are also some bad parts, but they are easily avoided after some research, though even the bad parts are fairly safe compared to some of the crime hot spots in Los Angeles. It can be a terrible living experience if the wrong area is chosen to reside, so avoiding it at all costs should be a high priority when planning the move.

People that would like to go shopping will like WH. The three different shopping malls and wide array of chain stores satisfy the desire for any type of goods. all of these areas to shop are within easy reach of anywhere in Woodland Hills, making for an easy convenience to obtain the items one needs. Most places are near the Ventura freeway, making it super easy to travel within WH or to another city.

Creativity is in no small supply in Woodland Hills, also. It is easy to be a competent dancer, since there are many fantastic Woodland Hills dance lessons in the city. There are three different parks to train or just relax in, and the beach is merely twenty minutes away, too. Avid golfers will delight in the golf course WH has at its country club. On top of this, every Sunday night throughout the summer, one can find concerts put on in Warner Center Park. Other bordering cities are very difficult to get around in, so residents will greatly take pleasure in the effortless ride to their Woodland Hills dance studio.

Although Woodland Hills might not be everyone’s favorite, it is an excellent area to start out in when moving from a small to a big city. The atmosphere and ease of commuting make it a great, well-rounded area to experience the person’s first steps within the area.

When the Milwaukee Brewers signed Ryan Braun with the knowledge that they also must soon sign Zack Greinke, they sent a message to Prince Fielder: we won’t sign you this offseason.

This is not because they don’t want to, it’s because they can’t. the Cleveland Indians knew C.C. Sabathia was a $20 million a year pitcher, and no small market team can sign such talent, so they traded him away. Many idiot fans criticized them for it, but there was no way a prudent small market team could have kept him in the long run.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t do this with Prince. to their credit, since they had a playoff- worthy team, they kept him throughout the season with the hopes of beating the favorite Philadelphia Phillies to get to the World Series. the Brewers are all in on this season, but are also playing it smart with Braun and Greinke so that they can be fighting for the division lead for many years to come.

Prince Fielder is a nice kid. I should say a nice guy, but I remember him as a kid. he and my son were in the same class at Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Florida. he was not a spoiled brat, like many sons of pro athletes can be. he was not a trouble maker. he was the kid next door, and I say this as a big compliment.

So, I am biased in my response to his being honest when he said publicly that he will be gone from the Brewers after the playoffs. If he were maximizing his relationship with the Brewers fans, he would have invoked player speak and said how he was focusing his attentions on clinching the division and bringing a World Series championship to the Brewers, and then after that, he would look at his options. he would say how he loves the Brewer fans and would like to stay in town if it is at all possible.

Instead, he said out loud what everyone knows – the Brewers don’t have the money to sign him, so he will be going elsewhere. I have no problem with this. We know a player of Prince’s stature is going to do everything he can to lead the Brewers to a World Series. he won’t change his style of play because he doesn’t expect to re-sign with them. so why is everyone worried?

The next question, of course, is who will sign him? Prince will be a $20 million per year player as a first basemen or a DH. the Yankees have heavy hitting, golden glover mark Teixeira at first. Would they sign Prince as a DH? You bet. the Red Sox have Adrian Gonzalez at first base. same situation with DH? Prince might like the Monster in Fenway rather than the deep seats in left field at Yankee stadium.

But, there is a sleeper. the soon to be Miami Marlins will have a new stadium, and who better to sell tickets and luxury seat licenses than a young man who comes from a town only 2 hours north of the new stadium? so, look for the Marlins to be in the mix for Prince Fielder as well.

MADRID (Reuters) – World middleweight champion Sergio Martinez believes his most realistic chance of winning recognition as the world’s best boxer lies in a bout with American Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The 36-year-old Argentine (48-2-2), named 2010 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America, told Reuters that Manny Pacquiao was reluctant to take him on.

He accused the Filipino of making unrealistic weight demands and said he was targeting the undefeated Mayweather instead.

Welterweight Pacquiao (54-3-2) currently tops the list of the best pound-for-pound boxers compiled by ‘The Ring’ magazine ahead of Mayweather (42-0-0), also a welterweight, in second place with Martinez third.

“It’s a disgrace what they (Pacquiao’s camp) are asking,” Martinez, a former cyclist and soccer player who came late to boxing, said in an interview in the Spanish capital after a training session at a local gym.

“It would be better if they just said they didn’t want to fight me, because they know I’ll knock him out.”

Martinez, who sports an elaborate dragon tattoo on his left bicep, said Pacquaio’s people had told him he would have to agree to slim down to 147 pounds and limit his weight to 150 pounds for the actual bout.

“We are working on a long-term plan to stabilize my weight at 154 pounds in case a fight with Mayweather can be organised,” Martinez said.

“To be considered the best pound for pound I just need this little push, a great fight with one of the two.

“I feel as if I have achieved nothing yet in boxing. Nothing. If I quit tomorrow people would forget about me. I would even forget about myself.”

Martinez may have a tough time making a match with either of the big two, at least until they have met each other in the fight eagerly awaited by boxing fans.

Pacquiao has never fought above 150 pounds and is under no pressure to accept a meeting with the Argentine, while Mayweather treasures his unbeaten record and may be loath to take on a dangerous bout before cashing in with a lucrative clash with Pacquiao.

Pacquiao’s latest victory, a majority decision against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas this month, disappointed even some of his most ardent supporters back home in the Philippines.

Martinez was scathing about Pacquiao, saying the Filipino did not deserve to be considered the world’s best.

“I don’t know when the last time was that Pacquaio took on one of the best pound-for-pound fighters,” Martinez said.

“Marquez today is not the fighter he was five years ago. I just need one chance, one fight against either one of them (Pacquiao or Mayweather). I think I deserve to be where I am.”
