The U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center reported the quake, centered around Rockville, Md., hit at 5:04 a.m.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage in Maryland, and no reports of damage in York.

On the Survey’s website, reports of tremors had come in from as far away as the middle of West Virginia.

In Pennsylvania, reports came from as far north as Selinsgrove. The site listed the severity of the tremors in York County, reported from the Delta area, as “Intensity III,” characterized by light shaking and no damage.

Yorkers would have heard “a little rumble” and felt a sensation similar to “if a heavy truck had just gone down the road past your house,” said Jeri Jones, a geologist with Spring Grove-based Jones Geological Services.

“You might’ve been eating cereal at the kitchen table and felt your chair move a little and thought, ‘Did I just feel something?’” he said.

The quake probably wasn’t enough to rouse people from sleep, he said.An old friend: At fault for Friday morning’s quake is a Mesozoic basin that stretches through York County, the same geological feature causing the

anomalous series of quakes that have been rocking the Dillsburg area over the past two years.

The basin was an everglade area about 200 million years ago, said Jones, who has been leading the investigation into the cause behind the more than 3,000 quakes that have hit Dillsburg since October 2008.

The Earth’s crust is weaker along the Mesozoic basin because it was once a place where — when the land on Earth was joined into one large continent called Pangaea — the future continent of Africa was trying to pull apart from the future continent known as North America, Jones said.

For this reason, earthquakes along the basin aren’t uncommon, he said.

“It’s just mother earth relieving some of her pressure,” Jones said.

The most recent “large” earthquake in Dillsburg, where tremors are reported frequently, was a 2.9 magnitude logged on June 3.

Jones and other area scientists are still developing a theory behind all of the geological events in the area.

 “We’ll probably never prove it for sure,” he said.
